The Polk Memorial Baptist Church and Mortonsville School are linked to the people of Elm Bend. Mattie Johnson Gray, the James P. Ford, Wheat, Creth, Johnson and other families are connected through marriage, work, or worship. The W.H. Sellers Distillery and James P. Ford Distilleries were located near Mortonsville. Polk Memorial Church is still open and still stands though the distilleries disappeared long ago.

Church Cemetery; this sacred ground holds the deep-rooted history of the Elm Bend community, serving as the final resting place for generations of families who built our local heritage.

This church was the heart of the community for members like Mattie Johnson and her family. We honor their history by preserving these records for all who follow.
